The Gorilla Research Group in the Department of Primate Behavior and Evolution at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for a two-year position (may be extended depending on funding, especially externally obtained funding via grant applications by the researcher) to examine patterns of social behavior in Bwindi mountain gorillas and western lowland gorillas. The scientist will focus on management and analysis of long-term datasets to investigate patterns of dominance, agonistic, and affiliative behaviors. The aim is to test hypotheses concerning variation in social relationships among gorillas and make comparisons between the two species of gorillas. This position will be based in Leipzig, Germany and involves analysis of long-term datasets and producing peer-reviewed publications. Assisting in project management and possibly some fieldwork will also be part of the position.
Qualifications/Experience:
Candidate should have:
-PhD in anthropology, zoology or other related field.
-Strong background in methodology used in animal behavior studies, notably observational studies on primates.
-Familiarity will literature on primate social systems, social behavior, and socioecology.
-Experience in database management.
-Ability to conduct statistical analysis on large datasets.
-Motivation to think creatively
-Good communication skills (verbal and written), good quantitative skills, and the ability to work independently.
-Proven record of writing and completing peer-reviewed scientific publications.
Salary will commensurate with experience. The position will start in early 2023.
