The Fish Etho Group (FishEthoGroup Association, PT) is a non-profit association bridging the gaps between science and the stakeholders in the aquaculture sector: producers, certifiers, retailers, NGOs, policy makers and consumers. Our goal is to study and improve the welfare of farmed fishes and other aquatic animals by applying ethological scientific knowledge into best practices in fish farming.
Throughout the years, our team has been involved in many areas of the aquaculture sector, from scientific research to applied solutions, from auditing to policy. We use that expertise to promote the welfare of fishes through many initiatives with our partners and collaborators.
We develop science-based solutions to assess and improve the welfare of captive and wild-caught fishes. In our approach, we apply a strong background in aquaculture and ethology to address the welfare of fishes. We use state-of-the-art knowledge on the behaviour of a species to understand how its welfare is affected under farming conditions and what we can do to promote it.
We are searching for a Training and Consultancy Manager to implement, supervise and further develop our fish welfare training programs. Our aim is to deploy a stakeholder-focused ambitious training and consultancy program that reflects our state-of-the art activities in research and improvement of fish welfare.
The main tasks to be developed by the selected candidate will be:
- Develop general and customized advanced training programs on fish welfare.
- Manage an online training platform.
- Organise, supervise and participate in in-person training courses.
- Support customers on online training courses.
- Create and maintain customer relationships.
- At a senior stage lead our consultancy program for industry, policy-makers, NGOs, certifiers, retailers or other stakeholders involved in aquatic animals.
- Other tasks may include participation on scientific projects, dissemination of knowledge, fundraising, secretariat or organisational duties for the association.
The candidate must have:
- MSc degree or higher in biology, veterinary sciences or related areas
- Experience in aquaculture, preferably on research, welfare, marketing, management or commercial aspects and dealing with customer-client relations.
- Proficiency in written and spoken English, whereas proven competences in other languages are a plus.
The candidate should have:
- International experience, preferably in the aquaculture sector
- Ideally, some experience in scientific research, either applied or fundamental, involving fish physiology, behaviour and/or welfare.
- Some experience in web-based interfaces, basic photo and video editing.
- Some experience in managing events, registrations and other tasks related to the logistics of advanced training, on-line or in person.
The working base of the FishEthoGroup is at the Centre of Marine Sciences, University of Algarve, Faro, Portugal. Preferably the successful candidate would be based in Portugal as that would bring a series of working benefits. We would be able to offer (limited) assistance in relocation. Otherwise, the work may be executed remotely from abroad. The FishEthoGroup is a small team, with members spread worldwide. Therefore, the candidate must have the ability to communicate effectively and enjoy working independently while complying with deadlines. The candidate must also be available to travel both within Portugal and abroad.
What we offer:
Attractive salary and conditions from the start, and increasing depending on volume of work and financial availability in the following years.
(Note: net values will depend on type of working agreement, location of work and other factors).
Payment in a trial period of up to 1 year is due upon invoice. After this trial period we expect to negotiate a working contract based on the terms described above, if the new team member is based in Portugal.
Important note: the FishEthoGroup relies on 3 sources of funding: competitive calls, non-competitive international funding sources and services provided to other organisations.
Current funding and projects are expected to last through 2024. For the future there are abundant calls, applications and opportunities. The current team exists since 2016 with continuous funding.
