The Department of Animal & Poultry Science (APS) at the University of Guelph invites applications from outstanding candidates for one five-year, contractually-limited Assistant Professor position specializing in Poultry Welfare. The successful candidate will have a strong research background in poultry welfare, or related research that could be applied to the scientific assessment of poultry welfare issues. Expertise with techniques from behaviour-genetics, behavioural neuroscience or stress physiology will be considered favourably. The successful candidate will develop and lead an innovative research program in Poultry Welfare, will engage in research that complements the activities of the Poultry Welfare Research Centre and will collaborate with other core faculty of animal welfare scientists in the Campbell Centre for the Study of Animal Welfare (CCSAW).
Applicants must have clear potential for effective teaching in the classroom, world-class research, securing research funding, and connecting with internal and external constituents. As with all positions in APS, this position will be open to liaising with a broad cross section of stakeholders as dictated by their research efforts and teaching responsibilities. The successful applicant will engage in: teaching (40%); research (40%); and service (20%).
The Department of Animal & Poultry is a research-intensive department with successful, related programs for graduate and undergraduate students. Research and teaching emphasize the basic sciences relevant to animal development and wellbeing. The current focus revolves around farm animal species, although new initiatives have expanded interests to accommodate companion and zoo animals. APS’ major disciplines include: animal nutrition, physiology, behaviour and welfare, breeding and genetics, growth and development, and meat science. As part of the Ontario Agricultural College (OAC), APS has a long history of achievements in serving agriculture and agrifood industries within Ontario and beyond. The Campbell Centre for the Study of Animal Welfare (http://www.uoguelph.ca/csaw) was the first of its kind in North America and draws from its unique mix of intellectual and research disciplines including animal and poultry science, veterinary medicine, psychology, philosophy, genetics and zoology. The mission of the centre is to promote the welfare of animals through research and education. New research ideas and innovations are quickly extended to end-users, and this has been made possible by a successful working relationship among APS, CCSAW, the various animal producer groups and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs. More information can be found at: http://www.aps.uoguelph.ca/ and http://www.oac.uoguelph.ca/ .
