Position Description:
We are looking for a field assistant for a PhD project investigating reproduction and stress in female crested macaques (Macaca nigra). The study will be conducted in the Tangkoko Nature Reserve, North Sulawesi, Indonesia. The work of the field assistant will include behavioural data collection on female crested macaques, taking pictures of female sex skin coloration as well as faecal sample collection for hormone analyses.

The project is supervised by Dr. Antje Engelhardt, German Primate Center and
Dr. Muhammad Agil, Gholib Assahad, Department of Clinic, Reproduction and Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Bogor Agricultural University, Bogor, Indonesia

Qualifications/Experience:
A bachelor degree in anthropology, biology, ecology, forestry or any other relevant field is required. 
The language in our team will be English but the willingness to learn basic Bahasa Indonesia is expected. 
Previous field experience is welcome but not required. Priority will be given to applicants with successful experience collecting behavioural data from individually recognized mammals.
Experience of working in tropical conditions under demanding physical exercise is helpful as monkeys are followed from dawn to dusk (about 12h a day; 5 days a week) in a tropical rain forest.

- feel comfortable living under basic conditions and being far away from family/friends 
- be willing to adapt to a foreign culture 
- be emotionally mature, friendly, energetic and very patient 
- be able to maintain a positive attitude towards hard and tiring work.

Salary/funding:
If funding will be raised, a small stipend will be given for each month of successful work at the end of the field period.

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
In the field, food and lodging will be covered by the project. Airfare, in-country transportation, insurance and visa/permit fees have to be covered by the assistant.

April 2013 – September 2013
