Position Description: I am looking for two highly motivated students or research assistants to run fake predator experiments for a project about risk-taking in wild vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus pygerythrus) within the Inkawu Vervet Project (IVP) (https://inkawuvervetproject.weebly.com), Kwazulu-Natal, South-Africa. IVP is an experimental field site where we conduct some experiments involving food with wild habituated vervet monkeys and that necessitate to put GPS loggers on some monkeys, which is done in respect with ethical regulation. The research assistants’ main duties will be to collect behavioural data on habituated groups of wild vervet monkeys (focal animal sampling; ad libitum data), conduct fake predator field experiments and analyse videos of the experiments. Part of the analysis will take place on-site. The assistants would also help in others general team duties (e.g. teach new volunteers to recognize the monkeys). Depending on their motivation and future career plan (e.g. a PhD), they are highly encouraged to be involved in co-authoring papers based on the data they collected. Applicants who want to pursue a post-grad degree (MSc. Or PhD) in behavioural ecology or any related field are especially encouraged to apply to these positions. The assistants are expected to spend about 8 months in the field (the 2 first months being dedicated to training). The applicants will be responsible for their own field equipment (hiking shoes, bush clothes, rain gear, etc.), as well as travel to South Africa, food costs (about 16 euros per week), vaccinations and travel insurance. Research equipment (video camera, binoculars and VHF-receivers for telemetry) are provided. The flight ticket will be reimbursed after the completion of the work. Qualifications: Successful applicants have completed at least undergraduate university degree in zoology, biology or animal behaviour; are proficient in English, have excellent social skills, and are able to work within a large, interdisciplinary research team under field conditions (8h a day, 6 days a week). Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging): Free on-site lodging, financial compensation of travel (after having completed the work) and a stipend equivalent to about 250 euros/month will be available after the two months training. The stipend relatesto the data analysis component of the position as it is not generally a field assistant task. Term of Appointment: From July-August to February-March (at least 8 months) Application deadline: February 13th, 2023 Comments: Applications consisting of a motivation letter (1 page, file named: your name-motivation letter) and curriculum vitae (up to 2 pages, file named: your name-CV) and a recommendation letter, or a contact for the recommendation; should be sent electronically to Charlotte Canteloup.
