Ph.D. scholarship: Evaluation of suitability for transport in dairy cows

Applications are invited for a Ph.D. fellowship/scholarship at the Graduate School of Science and Technology, Aarhus University, Denmark, within the Animal Science programme available from 1 November 2013 or later.

Research area and project description:
A large number of dairy cows are transported for slaughter every year. The suitability of animals for transport has been a ‘hot topic’ in the media for some years. Despite this, the existing scientific knowledge regarding the welfare consequences of and the suitability for transport is very limited. The aim of this Ph.D.-project will be to develop an operational tool for the assessment of suitability for transport for dairy cows destined for slaughter. Such a tool could be based on clinical and behavioural evaluations of individual cows before and after transport.
The Ph.D project will be part of a large project studying suitability for transport in several species. This large project is done in cooperation with University of Copenhagen and includes expertise within animal behaviour, veterinary clinical science and veterinary epidemiology.

Qualifications and specific competences:
Applicants to the Ph.D. position must have a relevant Master’s degree (e.g. DVM or MSc in Animal Science) and an interest in clinical evaluations of individual animals and animal welfare.
