Essential Functions:
These positions require highly motivated individuals with the ability to work independently to conduct systematic surveys using acoustic arrays at Big Cypress National Preserve (BCNP), Florida to locate roosts of the endangered Florida bonneted bat (Eumops floridanus). Selected applicants will work in a team of 2 and use SM2, SM3 and SM4 acoustic detectors in an array in remote locations throughout BCNP. Experience with acoustic detectors and SonoBat TM, Kaleidoscope Viewer and ArcMap software is required. Field work includes the ability to use a 4WD vehicle, navigation using a GPS, map and compass, as well as hiking through swamps for long hours. In addition to conducting acoustic surveys, teams will use treetop camera systems to search tree cavities to confirm bat occupancy. Selected applicants will collect, download and analyze acoustic data for the presence of Florida bonneted bats, manage all acoustic data files, maintain GPS locations of acoustic arrays and tree roosts in ArcMap, and input collected cavity search data into an Excel spreadsheet, as necessary. The team will coordinate closely with BCNP personnel throughout the project.

Work Schedule:
Employees will be expected to work an average of 40 hours/week for 8 weeks. Work schedule may vary, but will not exceed 40 hours in a week. This position is located at Big Cypress National Preserve (BCNP) in southern Florida and will be heavily coordinated with National Park Service staff. The position pays $12/hour.
Shared housing is provided and will be located at BCNP for the duration of the project. No pets allowed. A work vehicle is provided by BCNP for project use. Position may be required to complete a National Park
Service pre-employment background investigation before they are allowed access to a Federal Computer.

Deploying SM2, SM3, and SM4 acoustic detectors, downloading acoustic data, and analyzing acoustic data in SonoBat TM, Kaleidoscope Viewer for the presence of Florida bonneted bats at Big Cypress National Preserve, Florida.
Maintaining shapefiles of acoustic array locations and roost cavities in ArcMap.
Using a tree-top camera on a telescoping pole to search tree cavities for endangered Florida bonneted bat, as needed.
Collecting data on tree locations, roost size, cavity orientation, cavity height and other parameters.
Maintaining a database of field data.
Coordinating with National Park Service personnel on survey locations, equipment use, and
survey results.
Interacting regularly with the supervisor from Bat Conservation International., Imperiled
Species Program Director.
Qualifications/Requirements:
Ability to analyze acoustic data files using SonoBat TM and Kaleidoscope Viewer for the presence of Florida bonneted bats.
Ability to input and maintain acoustic array locations and cavity roost locations in ArcMap, or the ability to learn.

Demonstrated knowledge of bat biology and ecology. Demonstrated knowledge of scientific rigor, survey methods, and field techniques.
Ability to drive a 4WD vehicle.
Ability to navigate using GPS, map, and compass.
Ability to work long hours in strenuous field conditions with biting insects, venomous snakes and alligators.
Ability to hike through swamps for hours at a time carrying a 45-pound backpack with sensitive electronic equipment.

Bachelor of Science degree in Biology , Fish and Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biology, Wildlife Sciences, Natural Resource Management, or other similar degrees.

Ability to work independently with limited supervision and high motivation.
