Job announcement - Fish Ethology and Welfare Group, Faro, PT

The Fish Ethology and Welfare Group (FishEthoGroup Association, Faro, Portugal) is searching for a highly motivated and dynamic new member to join the existing team. The group performs research, training and consultancy related to the behaviour and welfare of farmed, wild caught and wild fish. For further information on activities and output see:

Profile:

The candidate must have an MSc degree or higher in biology, veterinary science or related areas and experience in scientific research, either applied or fundamental, involving fish physiology, behaviour and/or welfare. Other courses or certifications in fish experimentation, handling, health or welfare are desirable. Experience in aquaculture, fisheries or other types of fish rearing are also an advantage. The candidate must be proficient in written and spoken English, whereas proven competences in other languages are a plus.

The CV and experience must match the main working lines performed by the group, which are:
• Compilation of ethological and welfare profiles of farmed fish species under the Fishethobase project. (www.fishethobase.net)
• Scientific research (experimental and theoretical) on fish ethology and welfare
• Organisation of conferences, training events and other dissemination actions for scientists, industry, students, retailers or other interested audiences concerning fish welfare
• Consultancy for industry or other stakeholders involved in dealing with aquatic animals
Other tasks may include fundraising, secretariat or organisational duties for the association or research activities.

The percentage of working time of the successful candidate allocated for each task is expected to be: A) 70%, B) 10%, C) 5%, D) 5% and other tasks 10%

The working base of the FishEthoGroup is at the Centre of Marine Sciences, University of Algarve, Faro, Portugal. A fraction of the work is expected to be able to be executed from home.  The FishEthoGroup is a small team, with members spread worldwide. Therefore, the candidate must have the ability to communicate effectively and enjoy working independently while complying with deadlines. The candidate must also be available to travel both within Portugal and abroad.
