This is an opportunity to contribute to a innovative project studying personality traits in Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) and their potential for selective breeding programs. The project explores the genetics and environmental influences on fish personality traits and their association with growth performance and welfare.
Context of the study
Selecting fish based on personality traits can improve adaptability to rearing environments without compromising growth, but understanding the genetic and environmental influences on traits like boldness remains challenging. Arctic charr, a highly diverse and economically important species in Iceland, has shown significant advancements in selective breeding over 30 years, with notable increases in growth and reduced early maturation. Its unique traits, such as thriving at high densities and low temperatures, make it ideal for cold-climate aquaculture, though further research is needed to optimize welfare and productivity.
Key Details of the MS research project Behavioral assessments will center on Group Risk-Taking (GRT) tests, designed to evaluate risk-taking behaviors in Arctic charr. These tests will be conducted in a controlled environment using a mixed-family design, which is crucial for assessing the heritability of these traits. The experimental setup includes monitoring fish movement between "safe" and "risky" zones within trial tanks, providing quantitative data on individual and group-level behavioral responses. This family-based approach allows for reliable estimates of genetic influence while accounting for environmental effects, leveraging advanced statistical models to disentangle these contributions.
