Postdoctoral Researcher

Applied Animal Behavior and Welfare 
Department of Animal Sciences, Purdue University 

Position description: A full time 1-year (academic year) postdoctoral position is available starting the fall semester of 2014. This postdoctoral position is well-suited for an individual with a dual interest in research and teaching. 

Research duties and opportunities: The successful candidate will contribute to an applied poultry behavior and welfare research program within the Department of Animal Sciences at Purdue University. In addition to providing oversight to an AgSeed funded project focused on the evaluation and improvement of housing structures for laying hens housed in furnished cage systems, the successful candidate will be expected to provide mentorship to undergraduate and graduate students, and participate in data collection, analysis, interpretation, and publication. 
Development of original research ideas, and engagement in grant writing, and professional development activities, including participation in activities of the new Purdue Center for Animal Welfare Science, will be strongly encouraged. 

Teaching duties and opportunities: The candidate is expected to teach an undergraduate course in animal welfare during the fall semester. Additional teaching opportunities can be made available to candidates with a strong interest in teaching, and may include participation in relevant workshops, guest lecturing, and/or pursuing scholarly activities in teaching/education. 

Required qualification: 
• PhD in an area that emphasizes animal welfare, or 
• PhD in Ethology, Animal Science, Poultry Science, Physiology, or related field with experience in the field of animal welfare through coursework, teaching or research. 

Preferred qualifications: 
• Teaching experience 
• Experience with behavioral data collection methods 
• Experience with statistical data analyses 
• Evidence of strong written and oral communication abilities (ex. peer-reviewed scientific publications) 
• Ability to work in a leadership capacity as part of an interdisciplinary research group
