Research Assistantship - Primate Reproduction & Endocrinology (Peru) (show original)Jan 22
Background: In
tamarins and other callitrichine primates, females exhibit extreme
differences in reproductive success. In fact, even though multiple
females may live in the same group, only one will usually reproduce from
year to year. The others are suppressed in some way, but we do not
completely understand how or why. To help answer these questions,
research assistants will gather individual behavioral and hormonal data
from tamarin groups, including full-day follows to record interactions
between individuals and fecal sample collection for hormone analyses.
Participants will learn how to operate telemetry equipment, collect and
manage behavioral data, and perform hormone extractions at the site.
Training areas:
Behavioral data collection using scan- and focal-sampling; non-invasive
hormone sample collection; field hormone extractions; telemetry;
off-trail navigation; primate reproductive biology
Qualifications:
We are currently recruiting participants with the following requirements.
*Must be at least 18 years of age by the time the training program begins
*Demonstrate a grounding or strong interest in zoology, biology, or anthropology
*Previous
field experience is not required, but previous research experience
(either outdoors or in the laboratory) will be a plus
*Must be able to justify why this program is important to them and what they hope to gain from it
*Able to provide a letter of recommendation from a source that can substantiate the participant's experience and skills
*Participants
will not be discriminated against for medical conditions they might
have if we determine that being on this project will not pose an
immediate risk to their health.
*Due to the nature of the work and weather constraints, participants must be flexible about their days off.
Program Cost: $3000
for 6 weeks; $450 each additional week. Minimum commitment is 6 weeks,
but in special cases we will consider 5 weeks. Includes travel from
Puerto Maldonado to the field site (~5 hours). All meals and lodging
while at the field site are also included. Participants must purchase
their own flights to Puerto Maldonado.
