PI, Dr. Shelly Volsche, in the Department of Anthropology at Boise State University, is currently recruiting seeking a PhD Student, with expected start date Fall 2022. Position Description: The PhD student will be trained as a project coordinator and mentor to undergraduate students in the Evolutionary Connections of Humans and Other Species (ECHOS) Lab at Boise State. The PhD student will help with data collection and project management of the Bioacoustics of Human-Dog Play project, as well as develop and complete their own research project under the guidance of PI. General Responsibilities include: planning and organizing research projects within the lab; coordinating with dog owners/Idaho Humane Society for data collection; mentoring and training undergraduate research assistants; data analyses, and manuscript writing. The ideal candidate has strong interpersonal skills, experience in canine cognition/behavior, a background in conducting research, and the ability to work individually or in collaboration with others. Qualifications: • Master’s degree in psychology, animal behavior, anthropology, evolutionary biology, applied ethology, or a related field • Interest and experience working with dogs, including shelter animals • Demonstrated leadership skills • Ability to think creatively and develop new projects with undergraduates as well as PI • Willingness to supervise and mentor research assistants • Ability to organize and coordinate multiple projects • Knowledge and skills working with Microsoft and Google Suites • Statistical knowledge and skills working with SPSS or R Bonus Qualifications: • Interest and/or experience working with the human-dog bond (experience with play or vocalizations also a plus!) • Experience coding behavior manually or with BORIS • Experience working with Raven and/or knowledge of bioacoustics Position Available: The start date for this appointment is Fall 2022. Funding: Stipend support is available through the Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior PhD program, but PI will support student in seeking outside support, as well.
