OneWelPig project Ireland internship

Internship on pig welfare raised in Irish outdoor farms: Behavioural and thermal responses of pig raised in outdoor systems during a human approach test The Pig Development Department in Teagasc, Moorepark, Ireland, is offering an internship in pig welfare, as part of the OneWelPig project (https://www.teagasc.ie/animals/pigs/research/researchprojects/onewelpig-project/). One of the OneWelPig projects aim is to better understand the outdoor pig sector in Ireland. For it, farms visit will be visited from December 2022 to March 2023 to assess pig welfare, to understand how pigs affect the soil, flora and fauna in their environment, and determine the overall economic, environmental and social effects of outdoor systems. The data will be analysed during the rest of the internship. During these farms visits the student will help the team (postdoctoral researcher and Master student) to assess the fearfulness of the pigs performing a human approach test, during which animal behaviours (flight distance, ear and tail posture…) and infrared thermography imaging (superficial facial temperature) will be recorded. The student will also help the team to sample hair, saliva and faeces in the field. The student will be fully trained to non-invasively manipulate pigs for some of the measurements. The student will also learn how to analyse the thermographic photos using FLIR tool software, and the behavioural videos. Students will be trained in the use of any software that they use. The internship is based in the Teagasc Animal and Grassland research and Innovation Centre, about 5km from Fermoy Ireland, between December 2022 to May 2023 (date negotiable). Travel will be required to outside farms, but transport will be provided from the research centre. Selected student will be encouraged to apply for an Erasmus+ to benefit from a scholarship: https://erasmus-plus.ec.europa.eu/fr/opportunities/opportunities-forindividuals/students/traineeships-for-students-abroad This internship can be suitable for a Master 2 student who will join the field work when possible, or for a new graduate who wants more experiences. Applicants should have knowledge and/or experience in studying in animal behaviour and welfare, and if possible in pigs. Applicants should have a strong interest in animal welfare, be happy to work outdoors with animals, and be curious about technology and statistical analysis. Experiences in FLIR tool or Observers software use will be a plus, but is not mandatory. Application deadline: applications are open on an ongoing basis Send a motivation letter and a CV to Ophelie Menant ophelie.memant@teagasc.ie (main supervisor of the student, Postdoctoral researcher) and; Keelin O’Driscoll Keelin.ODriscoll@teagasc.ie and Laura Boyle Laura.Boyle@teagasc.ie (Leaders of the project)
