Koko and The Gorilla Foundation seek produce preparation volunteers

Hiring Organization:
Gorilla Foundation
Date Posted:
2010-12-20
Position Description:
The Gorilla Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation dedicated to the preservation, protection, and well-being of gorillas through interspecies communication research and education. The foundation was established in 1976 and is best known for its groundbreaking work with two western lowland gorillas, Koko and Michael, who were taught to become fluent in American Sign Language.

We are in need of volunteers to assist in the preparation of meals (including picking up donated produce from our donor stores) for our gorillas, Koko and Ndume. Meals are very exciting events for Koko and Ndume. They eat a combined 24 pounds of food a day, so there is a lot of preparation involved.
Qualifications/Experience:
We are looking for volunteers with:

-- a love of food

-- previous food handling/preparation experience

-- experience preparing vegetarian food

-- knowledge of a wide variety of fruits and vegetables

The work hours for our produce volunteers are from 8:00am to 12:30pm and we need volunteers for each day of the week. Volunteers also must have their own reliable vehicle and automobile insurance.
Term of Appointment:
Because the gorillas are very sensitive to any change in their environment, especially new people, we ask that volunteers make a long-term commitment, generally a minimum of one year. In addition, we need our volunteers to provide copies of a negative TB test and evidence of having received a flu shot.
Comments:
To find out more about the position and how to apply, tell us a little about your self and your interest in the position in an email to: volunteer@koko.org
In your email, also please include an essay of any length on "What Koko Means to Me"

Thanks!

Please note that we do NOT have any volunteer opportunities that involve direct contact with the gorillas.
