THE POSITION: Applications are invited for the term
position of Research Associate– Ethology
(2 years). Responsibilities will include
developing and implementing research protocols, data analysis and interpretation,
preparation of final reports, articles for technical publications, scientific
abstracts and papers, and grant applications.
The current research program includes projects on sow social behavior,
environmental enrichment and housing, housing density in nursery pigs and
management of pain at castration. The position offers a competitive salary and

THE CANDIDATE: The successful applicant will enjoy working
with the swine industry in a research environment and have a graduate degree in
applied ethology (PhD preferred) with a strong knowledge of swine
behaviour. The applicant will have
strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills and have
demonstrated the ability to work as part of a team. Further qualifications
include experience and training in the care and handling of livestock, and the
ability to direct research and supervise staff. The applicant must have the
ability to perform on-line literature searches, experience with standard
computer programs and statistical analysis packages, and demonstrated writing
ability. A valid driver’s license is
required.
THE COMPANY: Prairie Swine Centre Inc. is a non-profit
swine production research corporation affiliated with the University
of Saskatchewan, and located 10 km
east of Saskatoon. It offers a nationally and internationally
recognized program in research, technology transfer and education all directed towards
the efficiency and sustainability of pork production. The Centre operates a 350 sow
farrow-to-finish research herd and currently employees 38 full and part-time
staff and students.
