PhD application "Contour, rhythm or content? What does dogs brain grasp from human speech?” Aix-Marseille University / CNRS

For a master student (from a non-French university) looking for a PhD position : behavior and EEG in dogs.

The Integrative and Clinical Neuroscience PhD Program at Aix Marseille University offers a 3-year PhD scholarships for students who validated a master’s from non-French universities. Two different PhD projects have to be chosen among 21 and ranked to apply.

We propose a PhD on "Contour, rhythm or content? What does dogs brain grasp from human speech?", under the supervision of F Gaunet (LPC) and Pr. AL Giraud (Univ Genève) and in collaboration with T Legou (LPL).

Information about the selection process can be found here: http://neuro-marseille.org/en/phd-program-en/call-for-phd-applicants/ and details about the content of this project can be found here: Research project #8 http://neuro-marseille.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/list-of-phd-research-projects-2018.pdf

Objectives: to explore the neural bases (including laterality) of dog speech processing to address the contribution of the motor system to speech perception. We expect to determine whether dogs perceive speech on the basis of acoustic cues they can themselves produce, i.e. short “syllable -like” intonated sounds, or whether alternatively, they can be sensitive to cues that they cannot produce at all, phoneme-level cues.
Expected candidate profile: basic knowledge in EEG (e.g. master training), interest in animal cognition, good contact with animals, very good French level.
