Position Available: Animal Behaviorist

 OBJECTIVE:

The Animal Behaviorist performs required behavioral/enrichment/compatibility assessments for all species housed at a designated facility.  They maintain behavioral database information, monthly social housing reports, quarterly behavioral assessments and other documents as needed/requested.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

•       Bachelor’s degree in relevant field (Primatology, Anthropology, Psychology, etc)

•       Experience with animals, preferably Non-Human primates

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

·         Ensure all aspects of the BEEP (BIOQUAL Behavioral and Environmental Enhancement Plan) are followed

·         Perform quarterly behavioral assessments of all NHPs at a designated BIOQUAL, Inc. animal facility

·         Update NHP Colony Behavioral Database

·         Perform supplemental observations on animals reported to exhibit abnormal behaviors and create individualized treatment plans to address said behaviors

·         Maintain documentation regarding supplemental behavior assessments and monitoring

·         Assess NHPs for social housing and introduce individuals deemed compatible for social housing

·         Monitor NHP social pairs for continued compatibility

·         Create monthly social housing breakdowns of NHPs and small animals

·         Promote psychological well-being of all NHPs through the provision of various forms of environmental enrichment

·         Order, distribute, and monitor stock of edible & non-edible enrichment for both NHPs and small animals

·         Supply the Senior Behaviorist with social housing information, behavior assessments, and other pertinent information

·         Provide NHPs with positive reinforcement training as needed and positive human interaction

·         Monitor department spending at the designated BIOQUAL, Inc. facility

·         Create and perform required trainings regarding animal behavior and enrichment to staff

·         Meet periodically with veterinary staff to discuss behavior/enrichment issues/concerns

·         Design and conduct behavior studies to benefit NHPs housed at BIOQUAL, Inc. and other biomedical facilities

·         Meet weekly with all members of the Animal Behavior Department

·         Perform other duties as assigned
