Post-doctoral position available – Collective decision-making and collective information processing in gregarious and social animals

We are seeking a post-doctoral researcher to work on questions related to collective decision-making and collective information processing in gregarious and social animals. This is a 2 year position starting January 1st, 2013.

The Swarm Lab is a newly established lab (July 2012). The successful candidate will therefore work in tight collaboration with the principal investigator (Prof. Simon Garnier) to develop an original research program on the collective information processing abilities of large animal groups. This program will have experimental and theoretical components and applicants must have a proven ability to integrate both components into their research work. Experience with biological systems (social animals in particular) is preferred but applicants with experience with other collective systems (robotic swarms for instance) will be considered if their previous work shows a strong connection with biology. Experience with automated data collection and analysis, intensive computation (parallel computing, CUDA, etc.) and/or computer vision is a plus.

Besides his or her research work, the successful candidate is expected to help with the mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students carrying out research in the lab. The successful candidate is also expected to search and apply for grants along with the principal investigator in order to augment support dedicated by the lab and/or to extend his or her position beyond the first 2 years.

To apply please send a CV and a cover letter (2 pages maximum) explaining your suitability for the position and your intended research program to jobs@theswarmlab.com. Do not hesitate to contact us informally prior to applying if you have any questions. You should also arrange for at least 2 letters of recommendation to be sent directly to the same address by your references. Letters of recommendation sent by the applicant or incomplete applications will not be considered. The position is opened until filled.
