• Assist with providing appropriate enrichments to the animals’ structural and social environments and provide opportunities for species-typical activities.
• Monitor colony behavioral health, and provide care for animals needing special attention and/or treatment as directed.
• Observe animals and report behavioral abnormalities.
• Assist in performing behavioral assessments in response to reports of behavioral abnormalities.
• Assist with coordinating animal psychological/behavioral enrichment, including the acclimation and socialization of study animals.
• Review animal approval documentation and submit approval forms to appropriate personnel.
• Work with other Behavioral staff to precondition animals for study procedures.
• Work closely with the veterinary and animal care staff to ensure proper animal care standards are maintained.
• Assist with evaluation of new enrichment devices and provide input on strategies for individually and socially housed animals.
• Assist with revisions to relevant SOPs as needed to ensure accordance with the Animal Welfare Act and accepted professional standards.
• Routinely handle animals as required for duties.
• Maintain and track data related to social housing, exemptions to social housing, and abnormal behavior.
• Maintain documentation for the Behavioral Management Program.
• Assist with training animal care staff and other site personnel on aspects of animal behavior and enrichment as needed.
• May serve as IACUC committee member.
• Perform all other related duties as assigned.
