Leverhulme Trust Research Project Grant PhD Studentship in The only poisonous primates: the ecological context of venom in wild and reintroduced slow lorises

Program Description:
Oxford Brookes University’s Nocturnal Primate Research Group, in the Department of Anthropology and Geography, is inviting applications for a 3-year full-time MPhil/PhD studentship, commencing 1st July 2011. The studentship is in association with a Leverhulme Trust research project entitled "The only poisonous primates: the ecological and behavioural context of slow loris venom". The main topic of the PhD is 'The ecological context of venom in wild and reintroduced slow lorises.' The successful candidate will conduct 18 months nocturnal fieldwork in rigorous terrain at the proposed research site in Java, Indonesia; this work will comprise radio-tracking and semi-captive work in an experimental context. The student will join an internationally renowned team of experts in the conservation and ecology of nocturnal primates throughout Asia, Africa and South America. Departmental excellence in postgraduate supervision has been demonstrated through our recent award of the Queen’s Anniversary Prize.

Entrance Qualifications:
We are looking to recruit a candidate of the highest quality. The successful candidate is expected to have completed a Masters programme and/or completed a BSc (Hons) with Distinction or 2.i in Zoology, Ecology, Anthropology, or a related discipline. Previously completed research (dissertation, publication, conference presentation) and previous fieldwork experience are desirable. The chosen candidate must also be approved by the Leverhulme Trust.

Support (scholarships, travel):
The Leverhulme Trust award will pay the research degree fee at the current home/EU level each year for 3 years and the successful student will receive an annual bursary of £13,590 each year for 3 years. The Leverhulme Trust has agreed to honour any increases in line with RCUK published rates. Due to the level of funding available, the studentship is open to home/EU students only.
