Purdue University Center for Animal Welfare Science – Cluster Hire


Purdue University has a well-established record of excellence in research and teaching programs in Human Animal Bond and Farm Animal Welfare.  The newly created Purdue Center for Animal Welfare Science hosts the largest collaborative group of scientists in the United States working in these fields; utilizing diverse, cross-disciplinary approaches in the areas of animal and poultry science, veterinary medicine, psychology, philosophy, genetics, public health, and zoology.  The mission of the Center is to promote the welfare of animals through innovation in research, education and outreach.  To further enhance our capacity, we are currently looking to fill three new tenure track positions: a Center Director and two Assistant Professors.

Director: 

POSITION: A tenure-track senior faculty position in domestic animal welfare is available to head the Center for Animal Welfare Science. This individual will lead a team of scientists and educators in the Department of Animal Sciences (College of Agriculture) and Comparative Pathobiology and Veterinary Clinical Sciences (College of Veterinary Medicine) by facilitating research, teaching, and extension efforts.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibilities include the solicitation of traditional and nontraditional sources of extramural funding, serving as the lead spokesperson and contact/resource person on public policy welfare issues, and disseminating knowledge, guidance, and expertise of animal welfare science through a variety of media.  The Center’s responsibilities cover the welfare of both food producing and companion animals. The Director will be homed in the department that is most appropriate for the successful candidate.
The successful individual will develop and maintain national and international relationships with leaders in animal agriculture, animal welfare faculty at other universities and institutions, welfare researchers with a companion, lab, and zoo animal focus, government organizations, NGOs, and the general public.

QUALIFICATIONS: Qualifications include a Ph.D. degree, or equivalent, with a national and international reputation in animal behavior or animal welfare science, or related area, plus successful experience in research and teaching. The successful candidate must have the ability to lead faculty who are part of Purdue’s Center of Animal Welfare Science to preeminence. A solid understanding of food animal and companion animal behavior and management, as well as current issues in animal welfare policy and laws from a national and international perspective is required. Evidence of collaborative team building efforts and an ability to secure extramural funding is required. Strong communication skills and the ability to effectively interact in diverse cultural environments with media, politicians, producers, government agencies, faculty, staff, student populations, animal industries, commodity groups and the general public are essential.

RANK AND SALARY: Associate or Full Professor (academic year appointment). Salary is commensurate with qualifications.  Additional salary for 2 summer months is provided for the duration of holding the position as Director.
