Volunteers Required - Howler Monkey Rehabilitation

Hiring Organization:
SIBU Wildlife Sanctuary
Date Posted:
2019-12-19
Position Description:
SIBU Wildlife Sanctuary is currently looking for volunteers to start from March 2020, who can commit to a minimum stay of 1 month.

SIBU's mission is to rescue injured, orphaned and displaced wild animals and provide them immediate medical care, rehabilitation, and eventual release into the wild. When the animals are determined to be strong, healthy and old enough to be re-integrated into the jungle they begin a step-down release program. Animals unlikely to survive in the wild receive a permanent enriching habitat for their life-term care.
We are also educators and advocates who work cooperatively with other organizations to encourage respect for animals' lives and preservation of their habitat. We rehabilitate animals with assistance from veterinary and wildlife specialists and work closely with Costa Rica's electric company (ICE) to prevent electrocutions.

As a volunteer at SIBU you will be involved in all the aspects of the sanctuary. You will be working with young, orphaned howler monkeys that require around the clock care and a team of dedicated volunteers & staff. Other animals that might be in our care are raccoons, coati's, squirrels, porcupines, opossums, birds of prey & owls. We are also home to one collared peccary that will remain in our care permanently.

Volunteer duties include, but are not limited to:
* Food preparation
* Cleaning enclosures & feeding bowls
* Putting out fresh leaves
* Monkey laundry
* Syringe feeding orphans
* Observing behaviour
* Making sure the infants are safe at all times
* Preparing hot water bottles
* Keeping the sanctuary grounds clean and presentable, including all facilities
* Assisting with educational tours
* Keeping all work spaces clean
* Social media

Working hours depend on the number of volunteers that we have. On a normal volunteer schedule each volunteer has 1 full day off per week; 2 if possible. The working days are 7am - 6pm, however we try to stagger volunteer shifts so noone is working the whole day. Normal lunch breaks are 2 hours long.

On your days off you are free to explore the Nosara area: take a yoga class, go horse riding on the beach or enjoy the most beautiful sunsets you will ever see.
Qualifications/Experience:
We are looking for mature, flexible, open-minded, hardworking volunteers. Preferably 21+ and independent.

We need caring individuals that are fine with tedious, dirty work. Working with vulnerable young animals can be hard; mentally and physically. Volunteers need to be eager to work, self-motivated, respectful and most of all: flexible. Volunteers will be working both in team-setting as well as independently. Volunteers will get hot, wet, dirty & tired, but in the end the results of your work will be your reward!

Costa Rica has a very hot & humid climate which doesn't make work easier. There are many insects here, but there is no malaria.

Please understand that, if we accept you as a volunteer, we are keeping a space for you at the casita. If you are not able to commit fully to our project, please don't apply as we heavily rely on the help of our volunteers.

Some level of Spanish is appreciated, but not required. Fluent English is mandatory.

All volunteers need to have an up-to-date tetanus vaccination and international health insurance.
Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
We ask for a $200 contribution per volunteer, per month to cover the expenses of accommodation, gas/water/electricity and wifi. We run solely on donations and all the money that comes in goes directly to monkey care.
Our accommodation includes one casita with 2 volunteer bedrooms (2 beds each), 2 bathrooms, full kitchen with fridge & oven, washer/dryer and a small living area. There is a tent that houses an extra 2 volunteers that has shelving, electricity, 2 single beds and private bathroom.

Rice and beans are cooked communally every day.
