Postdoctoral position for Neuroscientist / MRI scientist

The University of Antwerp is seeking to fill the following full time vacancy (m/f) at the Department of Biomedical Sciences of the Faculty of Pharmacy-Veterinary and Biomedical sciences:

Postdoctoral position for Neuroscientist / MRI scientist
Bio-Imaging Lab
University of Antwerp
Belgium

The core R&D activity of the Bio-Imaging Lab (http://webh01.ua.ac.be/biomag) is experimental high-resolution neuroMRI focusing on neurodegeneration, neuroregeneration, neuronal plasticity and brain activity related with auditory memory and auditory learning. The research is performed on rat and mouse models for different human neuropathologies and on songbirds as a model for neuronal plasticity, auditory processing and learning for which the Bio-Imaging Lab became renowned.

The Bio-Imaging team moved last year to an exquisite new facility harboring a separate songbird animalarium (housing for 3 different bird species in two different light/dark cycles each and an extra room with sound boxes) and 3 high field small animal MRI systems including two 7Tesla and one of 9.4Tesla system from Bruker. Besides that, the lab also has in-vivo Bioluminescence - Fluorescence (BLI) camera from Biospace (France). Our group has access to micro PET/SPECT/CT and advanced light and electron microscopy and image processing through other UA research teams with whom we are clustered into a larger imaging network.

Profile and requirements:

• You are committed to giving the best of yourself in your job.

• You hold a doctoral degree in neurosciences (or other if relevant for the job)

• You have excellent knowledge on at least one of the following topics: neuroplasticity, neurogenesis, neuroMRI, songbird brain and hormones, songbird genetics, songbird molecular work......

• Having experience with in vivo neuroMRI is a bonus

• You have experience with working with small animals (rats, mice, songbirds is a bonus)

• You have an excellent scientific CV, have good writing skills for both publishing and project writing.

• You are clearly a good team player, you are a creative and critical scientist. You have experience in coaching PhD students who will be under your supervision.

We offer:

A full-time position as a postdoctoral fellow in the framework of a new 5 year IAP project entitled PLASTOSCINE: Hormones and neuroplasticity: image (MRI) guided discoveries of molecular mechanisms in neuroplasticity. The contract is for one year, will start October 1st 2012 and will be extended up to 5 years upon good performance.
