Farm Animal Welfare and Behaviour
ILVO is the Institute for Agricultural and Fisheries Research, located near Ghent, Belgium. It consists of
four units, one of which is the
Animal Sciences Unit

The
Farm Animal Welfare and Behaviour Research Group
is part of the Animal Sciences Unit of ILVO.
The main species being studied here are cattle, pigs, poultry and rabbits. These animals are all
represented
on
our experimental farm, although several projects also (partially) take place on
commercial farms.
Examples of
research topics
are:

Welfare of broiler chickens during transport

Lameness in group-housed sows

Group-housing systems for rabbits

Welfare of dairy cattle

Improving chickens’ free range use

Using sensor technologies to monitor animal welfare
Possibilities for students
There are several possibilities for students who want to visit ILVO, and gain research experience in the
field of farm animal welfare and behaviour:

Thesis (both BSc or MSc level)

Volunteer work (also for non-students)
We can also support postgraduate students,
who are looking to obtain a PhD-scholarship, with their
application.
