The Teagasc
Pig Development Department
is based in southern Ireland near Cork
. Our aim is
to support the
Irish
pig industry by providing
knowledge
based solutions to the challenges
facing
producers and stakeholders
.

e carry out
research in the areas of
pig
health,
behaviour, nutrition and welfare
, both
in our research centre
and on
c
ommercial farms
.
Current research topics in the departme
nt include:
Improving
piglet survival
through nutrition and management
Environmental enrichment strategies for growing pigs
Looking at the relationship between antibiotic use and
pig
welfare
Development of post mortem checks
to
identify welfare issues on
farm
As well as research and technical staff, our unit
hosts
several full time PhD and MSc
students, and we often receive visiting undergraduate and postgraduate students for work
experience or short projects.
